5 Design Tips for Busy Professionals with Kids (From Someone Who Really Gets It)
If I had to guess—you’re here because you’re juggling work deadlines, one of the many practices your kids are involved in, and that pile of laundry in the corner you’ve sworn you’ll get to… someday. I see you. You see me. We see each other! Life as a busy professional with kids is no joke. And let’s be real, trying to create a home that looks good and survives sticky fingers, rogue crumbs, misplaced LEGO bricks, and a dog who thinks the sofa is his throne? That’s a whole new level of chaos.
Here’s the thing: your home doesn’t need to be flawless. It just needs to work for you and your family. It needs to bring you a sense of peace and relief. With a little planning (and maybe a lot of coffee), you can create a space that’s beautiful, functional, and low-maintenance. Here are my top five design tips, all tested in the trenches of real life.
Tame the Chaos with Kid-Friendly Zones
Think about the spaces your kids use the most and how they tend to leave a trail of toys behind like little hurricanes. One of the best ways to reduce clutter (and your stress levels) is to create designated zones for their activities. In our playroom, we set up an organized storage system with cubbies, bins, and baskets for toys, books, and art supplies. Everything has its place, which makes clean-up faster and easier—even for the kids!
Adding a small table and chairs gives them a spot for crafts, puzzles, or homework, while keeping the mess contained. This setup not only keeps the room looking tidy but also teaches the kids that every item has a home (a mom win, if you ask me). The result? A functional, clutter-free space that works for everyone. If you don’t have small kids, no worries! Upgrade your kid sized furniture for desks suitable for pre-teens and teens, but the same rules apply. Create zones that are easy to store and organize all the things.
2. Choose Furniture That Can Take a Beating
Kids are adorable, but let’s face it—they’re also tiny tornadoes. And it doesn’t matter their age. Those tiny tornadoes will eventually grown into tsunamis. That’s why I’m a huge advocate for furniture that’s both stylish and durable. My go-to’s? Performance fabrics, removable covers and washable rugs. They’re stain-resistant, easy to clean, and basically magic.
When we replaced our old sofa, we went with one that could handle spills and football tackles without breaking a sweat. Bonus: it still looks amazing after years of use. Invest in high quality staples that work hard so you don’t have to.
Removable cushion covers that are easy to clean regularly.
3. Embrace the “Hide It All” Strategy
Clutter is inevitable when you have a busy lifestyle coupled with kids, but it doesn’t have to take over your home. Smart storage is your best friend. Think baskets, bins, and furniture with hidden compartments.
In your living room for example, use a coffee table with drawers for remotes and chargers, decorative woven baskets for toys, blankets and your pet’s essentials to store at the end of the day. Your living room can still look put together while serving as the hub of your home.
4. Kid-Proof Without Sacrificing Style
Here’s the good news: you don’t have to choose between a home that’s kid-friendly and one that looks good. The secret? Materials that hold up to real life.
Swap out delicate glass lamps for sturdy ceramic or wood ones and upgrade your rug to one that’s washable (yes, washable options are becoming more and more designer friendly!). As for the walls, semi-gloss paint is a lifesaver—it wipes clean with zero fuss. Little tweaks like these can make a huge difference.
Designer ottomans that double as storage.
5. Add Personality (Yes, Even With Kids Around)
Your home should feel like you, even if it’s being overrun by LEGOs and endless crumbs. For us, that means a gallery wall of family photos masterfully mixed with your prized art collection, furniture that didn’t come from your college glory days and plants that you try to keep alive (bonus points if your kids help water them).
Be sure to add some grown-up touches that make you happy—like a cozy reading nook with your favorite chair. Because let’s be honest, you deserve a space that feels like yours, too.
